NJCL Virtual Convention

If you are looking for ways to connect with your students over the summer months, please know that the National Junior Classical League has organized a VIRTUAL CONVENTION. The virtual convention will require internet access and a PC. Activities include creative and graphic arts contests, an Agon (certamen) tournament, colloquia and seminars, a That's Entertainment talent show, online Karaoke, and more! If your students are interested in participating, please read the information at the attached link, and let Catherine Stevens (Nicastro) and Brian Serwicki (state chairs) know ASAP. This is open to ALL students. You should also know that NYS does have one student running for national office.

World Languages - Needs Assessment Survey

World Languages - Needs Assessment Survey: Transitioning to Revised World Language Standards

Since 2017, the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) has collaborated with world language educators across New York State (NYS) to review and revise the K-12 Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Standards.  Details of these processes and the proposed standards can be found on the OBEWL webpage: LOTE Standards Review.

The proposed revision to the standards will be presented to the NYS Board of Regents for review and subsequent approval.  In anticipation of that approval, we are asking you to complete a brief survey that will provide us the information we need to best introduce you to the revised standards and to support you in transitioning to these standards over time.  With an approximate two-year time frame between approval and initial implementation, you can be assured that your professional learning and transition to the new standards will be done gradually. The priorities you identify on this survey will support our goal to create learning opportunities and resources that are useful to you, both short- and long-term, and in a range of teaching and learning contexts.

This 11-question survey should take you approximately 10 minutes to complete, and your responses are anonymous.  Questions 1-10 are required and question 11 is optional.  You will be able to complete the survey once, and the survey will close on July 15, 2020.

If you have any questions about the survey, please email Candace Black, World Language Associate at candace.black@nysed.gov, or Dr. Joanne O’Toole, NYS World Languages Standards Initiative Principal Investigator at joanne.otoole@oswego.edu

Thank you for taking the time to respond to this survey and to help us know how to best support you as we transition to the revised standards.

Sincerely,

Candace R. Black, World Language Associate, OBEWL-NYSED
Joanne E. O’Toole, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, SUNY Oswego
