Sponte tua! CAES Summer Get-Together

CAES would like to invite all its members and friends to gather and grow in a relaxed atmosphere this summer. Our plan is to provide an opportunity for everyone to share their ideas and learn from each other informally and/or in some more organized fashion. Think Latin summer camp where the participants set the agenda.

We do not have a list of speakers per se, but everyone is encouraged to come and bring best lessons, new ideas, concerns. If someone has a presentation (5 min, 15 min, 30 min), bring it on!

So far, four areas of special concern have been raised:

the writing and sharing of Regents-type materials,
the new AP syllabus,
using Latin orally in the classroom, and, of course,
new state assessment guidelines
the ever developing world of technology and computer programs.

The Young Women's Leadership School of Brooklyn currently has an opening for a full-time Latin teacher of levels 1 and 2, with the possibility of higher levels in the future. We are an all-girls public school located in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a mission of graduating 100% of our students and sending them all to four year colleges. We currently serve as a 6-9 grade school, but are expanding to 6-12 over the next three years. We are seeking a knowledgeable, passionate teacher to join our team, which already has one full-time Latin instructor. We currently use Ecce Romani as our text, and all of our Latin students take the National Latin Exam. The Brooklyn Latin School (TBLS) is one of New York City’s eight specialized (i.e. exam) high schools, offering a classical, liberal arts education. A replication of the prestigious Boston Latin School, TBLS was founded in 2006, and all of its upper class students are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, a challenging two-year course of study widely recognized by the world’s leading universities. We are presently seeking results-oriented teachers who exhibit effective leadership, thorough content knowledge, a reflective nature, a strong work ethic, and an appreciation for the discipline of teaching.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Availability for participation in summer planning and curriculum development

● Effective collaboration with colleagues to plan units, write interim assessments, share teaching strategies, visit peer classrooms, analyze student data, and develop best practice pedagogy

● Ability or willingness to take on duties that support classroom teaching (i.e. creating curriculum, regularly meeting with departments and grade level teams, writing and implementing school policy, being an active part of the school decision making process, etc.)

● Demonstrated experience or willingness to develop and implement an advisory curriculum and serve as an advisor to a group of 10-20 students

● Demonstrated experience or willingness to engage in a community where teaching is public (i.e. engaging in classroom visits, publication/critique of units, interim assessments, and curricula maps, sharing of dilemmas in Critical Friends Groups etc.)

● Willingness to adhere to the accepted norms and practices established by the TBLS school community

● Availability to participate in after school/Saturday tutoring programs.

● Availability and willingness to develop, lead, and recruit students for extracurricular activities such as clubs, sports, and teams

● Availability and willingness to engage in a limited number of evening/weekend student recruitment and parent outreach events

● Demonstrated ability to formulate higher-order, open-ended questions to lead students in scholarly conversation

Summer Course: 21st Century Technology in the Latin Classroom

Taft Education Center Course 12B12: 21ST CENTURY TECHNOLOGY IN THE LATIN CLASSROOM
Dates: July 2—July 6, 2012

Integrating technology in the Latin classroom is a powerful way to increase student achievement and augment engagement. This weeklong workshop will address the many ways that current technology can enhance and enliven the Latin classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of technologies that are valuable additions to both the elementary and advanced Latin curriculum. The workshop will address methods and tools for building vocabulary, teaching language skills, and integrating history and culture. The focus will be on using free or inexpensive web-based tools (Prezi, the Google suite, Popplet, social networks, animoto etc.) that work on various computing platforms to create media-rich lessons.

Participants will come away understanding both the important role that technology can play in the classroom and how to integrate it effectively. In addition to having multiple lesson plans to take back home, they will come away with a clear understanding of how to construct a technology-rich curriculum for their Latin classes. Participants should be comfortable with basic computing skills and must bring their own laptop for use throughout the week.

AP LATIN: TEACHING CAESAR

This week-long workshop is designed to lead teachers through most or all of Caesar’s Gallic Wartext for the 2012-2013 school year. It will be an experience translating and discussing the text, the political ramifications and the leadership role of Julius Caesar. We will work with Book 1: chapters 1-7; Book 4: chapters 24-35 and the first sentence of chapter 36; Book 5: chapters 24-48 Book 6: chapters 13-20. Teachers will leave with an understanding of the Latin and English text as well as prepared materials. Bring a Caesar text and a laptop computer or a flash drive. National Latin Teacher Recruitment Week asks as many educators as possible across the nation (and beyond!) to find one day to talk to their students about becoming secondary Latin teachers. NLTRW was created to address the Latin teacher shortage that we are facing in this country. The demand for Latin continues to grow, in great measure due to our own best efforts to raise awareness about the importance and richness of the study of Latin. Now that we have created the demand, it is time to create the teachers. NLTRW is scheduled for the first full week in March, but if you cannot speak to your students that week due to testing or holidays or whatever, just pick another day of another week. Conventiculum Buffaloniense - Spoken Latin Weekend - June 27-29, 2012

The University at Buffalo, SUNY (UB) Department of Classics will host a three-day spoken Latin workshop for Latin instructors and others interested in conversational Latin on the UB north campus from June 27-29, 2012.

The Conventiculum Buffaloniense offers an integrated, immersive experience in which participants practice speaking on a set of topics, then apply these skills through creative and engaging activities. Topics are chosen for their suitability for beginning Latin speakers and utility in teaching settings. A closing session will provide the opportunity for group discussion of active Latin pedagogy. The

workshop welcomes anyone with the equivalent of two years or more of college Latin. Participants need not have any previous experience speaking Latin, though the workshop is also suitable for those with some speaking experience who want to improve their skills.

This year, Conventiculum Buffaloniense offers Animalia Antiqua: a glimpse into how Latin speakers regarded our fellow sentients in the past and how active Latin speakers might consider them today.

The workshop moderators are:

Neil Coffee, Chair and Associate Professor of Classics at UB
Scott Ettinger, Riverdale Country School in the Bronx, NY, winner of the 2003 APA Award for Excellence in the Pre-collegiate Teaching
Catherine Nicastro, Williamsville South High School, Williamsville, NY

Dr. Coffee, Mr. Ettinger, and Miss Nicastro have several years of experience speaking Latin and leading spoken Latin groups. Their combined experiences include previous Conventiculum Buffaloniense workshops, Reginald Foster's Summer Latin In Rome, the Kentucky Conversational Latin Seminars of Terence Tunberg, and SALVI’s Rusticatio Virginiana. All of the moderators are working with active Latin exercises in their classrooms.

After a reception Wednesday evening, sessions will take place through the day on Thursday and Friday. There will be a participation fee of $95 to defray the cost of meals and materials (continental breakfast and lunch will be provided both days). Weather permitting, an optional excursion to the Buffalo Zoo will take place on Saturday morning at a modest additional cost. The fee will be reduced for student participants and subventions are available for instructors whose institutions do not provide funding. Arrangements will be made for teachers to receive professional development credit.

The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the Rome Prize competition. One of the leading overseas centers for independent study and advanced research in the arts and the humanities, the Academy offers up to thirty fellowships for periods ranging from six months to two years.

Rome Prize winners reside at the Academy’s eleven-acre center in Rome and receive room and board, a study or studio, and a stipend. Stipends for six-month fellowships are $14,000 and stipends for eleven-month fellowships are $26,000.

The 2011 Annual Institute will be in Rochester October 14-16. We will be joining NYSAFLT at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center (Rochester Hyatt Regency) to share ideas with our colleagues within the LOTE community.
